Finance Options

SolaFi 10 Year Operating Lease

A notable feature of the SolaFi Operating Lease solution is its ability to take businesses and residential estates from 70% to 100% off the grid with battery backup at no additional monthly cost. Moreover, this solution includes maintenance and insurance for a decade, giving clients peace of mind in terms of energy cost stability.

Asset Finance & PPA

Most major South African banks support the purchase of solar systems through their Asset Finance departments.

If correctly specified, most systems can achieve a net positive cashflow from the first month, when considering bill savings over repayments.

Speak to your SolaFi expert about the current PPA and subscription options.

Cash Purchase

If you are able to purchase the full system upfront, you will take advantage of the highest lifetime savings.

Typical residential hybrid systems cost between R100k and R300k fully installed, and are expected to save between R600k and R1.2M in Eskom bills over a 15 year lifespan.

Bond Finance

Taking advantage of bond financing to purchase the system can result in the lowest cost effect.

When properly specified, Bond Financed systems almost always result in higher monthly energy bill saving than resulting payment increase.

Future Costs

Eskom is expected to continue its 20 year average increase of at least 12,5% per annum.

Tax Incentives

The National Treasury has released a note on the solar panel tax incentive for individuals, which was announced by the Minister of Finance on 22 February 2023.

The objective of the incentive is to encourage households to invest in clean electricity generation capacity that can supplement electricity supply. The incentive is available only for 1 year, and can be claimed by individuals who pay personal income tax. The rebate can be claimed to the value of 25% of the cost of new and unused solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, up to a maximum of R15,000 per individual. ie Spending R40,000 on Solar Panels qualifies for a R10,000 rebate.

Inverters, Batteries, Installation and Generators are not included in the rebate.

The requirements include that only new and unused solar PV panels qualify, and they must be installed at a residence mainly used for domestic purposes. The solar PV panels must form part of a system connected to the mains distribution of the private residence, and the rebate applies to qualifying solar PV panels that are brought into use for the first time in the period from 1 March 2023 to 29 February 2024.

Our experts will guide you through the process of correctly claiming your rebate.

Commercial customers may claim tax incentives from the installation of a solar system, either as depreciable assets or expenses, at 125%.

Section 12B of the Income Tax Act, 1962 offers some consolation to producers of renewable energy and provides for an accelerated depreciation allowance for plant, machinery, implements, utensils and articles used in the production of renewable energy in the course of one’s trade.

Our experts will advise the appropriate taxation incentives as well as feed-in and net-metering opportunities available in your area.

System Types

Solar energy systems have become increasingly popular among homeowners and businesses as a way to reduce energy costs, lower carbon footprint, and increase energy independence.

There are several types of solar energy systems available to choose from, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.

Grid-Tied Solar with Battery Backup

Grid-tied solar systems with battery backup are similar to grid-tied systems, but they include a battery backup that can provide power during a power outage. Hybrid inverters provide this functionality.

The battery backup system stores excess electricity generated by the solar panels, which can be used when the utility grid is down and when it is available.

Grid-Tied Solar System

Grid-tied solar systems are are connected to the electrical grid and can generate electricity that is used in your home or business with the excess sold to your utility company.

These systems do not have battery backup, which means they cannot provide power during a power outage and they cannot use power from solar when the utility grid is down and unavailable to absorb any excess.

Off-Grid Solar System

Off-grid solar systems are not connected to the electrical grid and are designed to be self-sufficient.

They must use solar or batteries to power all needs regardless of weather and are thus more expensive and over-specced to cover all situations.

Off-grid systems are typically used in remote areas where connection to the grid is not possible or cost-effective.

A grid-tied solar and battery backup system is a smart solution for homeowners who want to reduce their dependence on the electrical grid and increase their energy independence.

With this system, you can generate your own electricity using solar panels, store excess energy in a battery, and use it during periods of low or no sunlight.

Here's how a grid-tied solar and battery backup system works:

  • Solar Panels: The solar panels installed on your roof or on the ground collect energy from the sun and convert it into DC (direct current) electricity.

  • Inverter: The DC electricity is then sent to the inverter, which converts it into AC (alternating current) electricity that can be used to power your home.

  • Energy Meter: If you generate more energy than you consume, the excess electricity is sent back to the grid and your energy meter will run backward, earning you credits with your utility company.

  • Battery Backup: When your solar panels generate more energy than your home needs, the excess energy is stored in a battery backup system. This energy can be used during periods of low or no sunlight, providing a reliable source of backup power.

  • Electrical Grid: When your solar panels generate less energy than your home needs, you can draw power from the electrical grid. If you have a battery backup system, you can also draw power from the battery to avoid using grid power during peak demand periods.

With a grid-tied solar and battery backup system, you can maximize your energy efficiency and reduce your dependence on fossil fuels. This system is designed to be a self-sufficient energy solution that provides reliable power during any weather condition or power outage.
